The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources

The world relies on a variety of energy sources. In 2018 fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, comprised more than 81 percent energy consumed. Renewables, like solar power, wind, hydroelectricity, and biomass, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is another 5 percent. Different countries utilize different sources of energy to meet the needs of their economy and environmental concerns.

Nature is a rich source of energy in a number of forms, including sunlight as well as wind, waves oceans and more. These sources of energy are transformed into more convenient forms of energy, like electricity or heat when they are harnessed. When the energy source is exhausted, they are nonrenewable energy sources.

Many fossil fuels as well as some of the other energy sources that are not renewable are damaging the environment. Mining oil, for instance can devastate the forests that are virgin to the earth. Fracking (hydraulic fracture) can cause earthquakes and water pollution. The combustion of coal releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.

Fortunately, a majority of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Hydropower, solar power and wind for instance, can produce electricity without the need to dig for new supplies.

Other sustainable energy sources are emerging, including tidal and wave power. To be used at a large-scale, these technologies require effective distribution networks. They need to be constructed using a source of non-renewable energy sources. As a result, these sources are not yet able to provide the bulk of our energy requirements. But it's important keep in mind that the costs for renewable energy equipment have decreased drastically over the last few years, and the efficiency is increasing rapidly.
